Hi,

I just updated to the latest version on Windows and the process to do that is to uninstall the program, keeping the database, then install the latest version.

I was wondering is it possible to backup or export that database where backup jobs, schedules and other configs are kept? Is it a file somewhere? A registry key? I see there is a sqlite3.dll file in the installation folder so maybe it keeps a SQL database somewhere?

Thanks!

Ive tried domain\username and the user@domain.com. Neither worked. Do you know if it is possible to do this with remote systems on Azure? Through Powershell commmands I was able to put the Azure based user into a local group to allow the permission to log on as a service. Vimalin asks for a user. Is it possible for it to ask for a local group off of the windows system? Instead of entering a User?

Does the local user have to be an admin to use Vimalin on windows 11?
In the past with windows 10 I could install vimalin as local admin, then let local non admin user backup VMs I set with running the application as the local admin account inside the users profile that did not have local admin. Though the non admin user could not make any changes to the current backup jobs nor could they start the GUI application. but the backups ran fine.

So two questions:
1. Can this application run and without local admin rights n windows 11
2. Is it possible to at the very lest get it to run like it did on windows 10 where i could set the user's backup jobs as an admin then let it run in the background? If i try this on windows 11 it will not start the service. because the local user does not have the rights to do so.

Hi Wil,
Recently some of our servers were infected.
For the most important servers we luckilly had Vimalin backups,
however I noticed that restoring e.g. a 500GB and a 900GB virtual machine
from normal harddisk takes a long time

Nowadays my VMs are running from NVMe RAID with a Vimalin backup to a big harddisk.

Would you consider extending Vimalin with a way to backup/restore from a fast disk?

I would like Vimalin to first backup to a fast disk e.g. NvME or SSD and afterwards copy it to a "slow" HDD.
I could then add a 4TB disk as go between, so Vimalin would backup faster.
Preferable the fast between disk would keep the last x backups (next to them being on the big harddisk).
This way backup would be fast, but more important if I want to restore a recent backup,
it would be faster than the 100-150MB/s I recently experienced

I have been trying to install Vimalin on a Windows 11 machine and cannot seem to get the username / password to accept. Every time it throws the following error

Error while installing the service (Code 3) Did you enter the correct password?

My username / password is linked to a Microsoft account as it decreed by my company but has administrator rights to the pc. The password is complex with non standard characters.
I'm assuming either or both of these may be the issue.

I have tried on another pc with a less stringent username / password combination and it seems to install fine.

Any thoughts?

Hi Wil,
I while ago, about 3 of my VM guest were broken, because a .VMDK was probably deleted by the virusscanner.
Thanks to your hint, I excluded the VmWare folders in Defender now, so this should not happen anymore.

I have Vimalin scheduled to keep 4 backups of every Vmware, but because I was to late,
all good backups were overwritten by bad ones.

To overcome this in the future, I want to ask for the following feature:
Could you check before the backup starts, if the Vmware is consistent (e.g. no missing files, and should be in "running" state)

Also this just came to mind, would you also consider adding a configuration switch to ONLY backup,
the Vmware when it is running ?
Just doing the restores rightnow, I see Vimalin kept backing up the Vmware guests, though they were not running.
So my "good" backups were overwritten by "bad" once.

I hope you will consider the above requests.

Hi there,

So I found out about this app and figured it would be perfect for me, even bought a license before trying it out!

I have since uninstalled Vimalin, but I wanted to at least post about the issue I had for reference and (possible) troubleshooting.

System/VM specifics:

Intel i9-9900K

64GB RAM

Dual Samsung EVO 970 500GB NVMe in RAID 0 config for 1TB volume total - this is the boot drive and where the VM resides

VMWare Workstation Pro 16.2.3

Host is Windows 11 Pro (x64)

Guest VM is Windows 10 Pro (x64), disk size ~ 275GB, 24GB RAM allocated to VM

Okay, so I configured everything (I won't get into the UI/UX, but that could really use improvements) and let the scheduled job run. It got to creating snapshot and the whole system becomes either partially or completely unusable (in waves). Mouse stutters, windows (host applications) unresponsive, VM completely frozen. After 25 minutes, Vimalin indicated the snapshot was done and it moved onto copying the files. Once that step was reached, things were fine while it copied the snapshot to the backup target - I was able to use the host and VM.

I even shut everything down and rebooted host and VM, just to make sure it wasn't a fluke, but the same thing occurred when I kicked off the new backup. Also note that the Event Viewer showed no suspect entries during the time the snapshot was being created and the system useability dropped dramatically.

The goal for me was to have this run daily, but also be able to use the VM/host during the backup - I expected some resource utilization/contention, but being unable to use the host/VM during the backup defeats the purpose, as I could shutdown the VM and copy the VM folder faster than this process and would still be able to use the host.

Anyway, just wanted to give you my feedback and issues.

I seem to remember a post a while back that mentioned that a version that supported Encrypted VMs might appear one day?

It's my 2 Encrypted VMs I really need to backup, so is there any update on that project please?

Thx

I have a registered version of vimalin and have had constant issue with backups failing with error: failed, unable to create the backup snapshot. I am running vmware workstation pro 16.1.2 on windows 11. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling vimalin with no relief from this consistent error. If I start from scritch I can usually get the a successful backup of vm's on the first try but any subsequent backups always fail. I need this to work and be able to do scheduled backups. I am looking for support on figuring this out so that this purchased software works as advertised. Please let me know if/how to pull and send logs if needed. Thank you

Installing the latest Setup 2.6.560 as a first time user, the service won't install, , as it returns a Code 1 (incorrect password?), but I can login (as an admin) to the computer with the username password I supply.

Any suggestions what to try? There's no domain controller.
Thx
