Hi,

In this case you can compare VMware Fusion to Microsoft Word and your Virtual Machine to MS Office documents.
Upgrading Microsoft Word does not delete your existing Office documents.
Similarly updating VMware Fusion does not delete existing Virtual Machines.
So your VM's should not be in danger by upgrading to a newer version of VMware Fusion.

If you want to make a backup of your virtual machine then locate the virtual machine and copy it to an external disk in its entirety. This assumes that you're technical enough to do so.

You can also try doing this with Vimalin, but it might complain depending on how broken your existing VMware Fusion install is.
If it works, then Vimalin will report that the backup is OK, Vimalin will certainly complain if it could not make the backup.
Also if Vimalin doesn't work, then please use the "Create support bundle" option in the Help menu and attach that bundle to a reply here so I can give you more specific details on making the backup manually.
